A long and deep legacy of white supremacy has always arrested the development of US democracy.

White Supremacy” is a symptom of an even larger problem. It seems to be innate to the human culture to dehumanize, marginalize, objectify and utilize identifiable groups of people, to be victimized for the profit of others. History abounds with examples; it is the Original Sin of Homo sapiens, I believe. We will not free ourselves of it innately; we must use our minds to do so.
Almost every one of the protesters in Dallas descended from someone else’s property. The ancestors of black Americans came unwillingly to America, and when they arrived, they were no more human than a mule. They had no more rights protecting them than an automobile tyre does.
Every step towards equality was made by African-Americans upon appeal to reason. They fought against our instincts as a species – to subjugate the different. The crucible of slavery and racism, in fact, was a scientific proof of Jefferson’s proposition:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

It deserves the footnote “proven by African-American minds.”
Every symptom of inequality is a symptom that we are sliding towards the Original Sin of tribalism and subjugation. In many ways, America has slid towards a MORE inhuman culture. The Retail/Industrial/Advertising world treats people as things; humans as mere objects to manipulate. Some of the push-back against black movement to equality came from poor white communities, who could not voice their complaint that, hey, we are being treated as property too! Shh!
We will move towards Jefferson’s Proposition, or we will move towards a state of being proles in eternal subjugation to the Corporate State. It is a time of choosing.
White supremacy is a symptom. Martin Luther King alone understood that. He was not out to save Black souls, he was out to save human souls, all of them, and that’s what makes him such an awesome preacher.

You and I are told increasingly that we have to choose between a left or right, but I would like to suggest that there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down–up to a man’s age-old dream, the ultimate in individual freedom consistent with law and order–or down to the ant heap totalitarianism, and regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would trade our freedom for security have embarked on this downward course.

That is not King, but another American; I’ll leave up to you to find out whom. But the spirit is similar. If ALL PERSONS are not treated with the dignity and reverence fitting for an individual creation of God, but rather as mere objects, we have failed as a society, we have regressed to the days of Sparta. A little Nietszche might help at the moment.
