A friend of mine has a low-level job answering phones for a clinic.  She encountered three rude and savage patients on the phone in a row, and it made her cry and unable to work. She asked her supervisor for a brief break.  When she returned, she was “written up” and forfeited all her bonuses and merit increases for six months.

Whomever invented the process of “writing people up” should be sternly lectured to.  My friend took down the little paper awards and pins for good service, things that actually did inspire her, and resigned from the Birthday Card Circulation group.

We are human.  We are not machines.  Adults are not worse if they cry, and that goes especially for women.  We have apparently joined the Cult of Inhumanity, and it’s not working for us.
