Somehow, the Makers of the List screwed up, and sent me a catalog for the 20th Annual Compliance Institute, to be held in April in Las Vegas. That’s one of the best times to be there, so the conventioneers will see a warmth unseasonable in other parts of the country.
But it should be held in August, because the HCCA sounds like an invention of CS Lewis, that belongs in the Screwtape Letters.
Quoting Lewis is fraught with difficulties. One goes looking through the woodshed for a certain scrap, and finds another wonderful but not quite what is needed, such as:
The trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you very often succeed.
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
But I’m looking for a certain one…ah, here….
I live in the Managerial Age, in a world of “Admin.” The greatest evil is not now done in those sordid “dens of crime” that Dickens loved to paint. It is not done even in concentration camps and labour camps. In those we see its final result. But it is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern.
The HCCA website should be visited, in the manner that the pathology laboratory should be visited. The Compliance Institute is every bit that it sounds like.
I understand that there is a book called the Fifty Shades of Gray, which narrates a series of sexual encounter between a man who likes to degrade and humble women; and a woman who contracts to participate in degradation and humiliation, for some purpose. To me, it seems just as easy to read the newspaper to find this same story, but not cleaned up to a degree that it can stir excitement.
The Compliance Institute is part of the Compliance Industry, the Ethics Industry (how’s that for an oxymoron.) One can register to become certified in Healthcare Compliance, Healthcare Privacy Compliance, Healthcare Research Compliance, and even to hold a FELLOWSHIP in Healthcare Compliance, a necessity, I am sure, for obtaining grants for the study of Compliance Theory.
The booklet is awash with reams of cheerful young faces. I’m sure that many believe that the enforcement of compliance, auditing and registering obedience, is the great Sluiceway into the New Medical World. It is now clogged with the cast-off residue of counterrevolutionaries, greed and wreckers; they must be washed away so that the New Healthcare Industry can flourish. No doubt that many of these faces can be seen at the Convention, and at the high-ticket Vegas items and shows in April.
The website should be visited, for it contains reams of soulless verbiage, a small vocabulary as of trolls, looping mindlessly about verbal concoctions containing Audit, Compliance, Regulation and such. It is as though one wrote a set of lessons originating in the Words on the Wall in Daniel:
While the King was having a Kingly party:
Suddenly the fingers of a man’s hand emerged and began writing opposite the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace, and the king saw the back of the hand that did the writing.
Then the king’s face grew pale and his thoughts alarmed him, and his hip joints went slack and his knees began knocking together.
The king called aloud to bring in the conjurers, the Chaldeans and the diviners. The king spoke and said to the wise men of Babylon, “Any man who can read this inscription and explain its interpretation to me shall be clothed with purple and have a necklace of gold around his neck, and have authority as third ruler in the kingdom.”
Then all the king’s wise men came in, but they could not read the inscription or make known its interpretation to the king.
None of the Wise Men could figure out what was written and Daniel was summoned. He spoke:
Now this is the inscription that was written out: `MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.’
This is the interpretation of the message: `MENE’–God has numbered your kingdom and put an end to it.
‘TEKEL’–you have been weighed on the scales and found deficient.
‘PERES’–your kingdom has been divided and given over to the Medes and Persians.
Yea, and to know the words became a giant buzzkill to the King and his righteous posse.
These words in the language of New Healthcare predict the death of healthcare in a lukewarm, unproductive, energy-less universe of Max Entropy, where nothing can be done but everything is according to rules.
Integrating Compliance into Business
Main points covered:
- Annual review of policies, procedures against legislation, environmental changes and operational goals;
- Compliance monitoring and review;
- Implementation of compliance across the enterprise
Do recall that this is a specifically HEALTHCARE COMPLIANCE organization. The lack of any verbiage about healthcare shows that the details of healthcare are trivial to the central operation – enforcement.

This is the End, as Jim Morrison said. We have this process that is deeply embedded in medicine that engages in Compliance Enforcement for its own sake, not having any thing to do with these rules, how they are created or for what purpose they serve, and whose; rules that are erected by “authorities” of unknown qualification; to quantity something and influence it so that the numbers increase, allowing for a report of improved quality.
This is without any sort of appeal to meaning or relevance in reality. it is no different than the worlds many psychotics live in – the coherence of order without any semblance of connection to reality. Our system will collapse a couple of Abilify’s off of True North
A consensus nonsense is still nonsense. A group movement towards rubbish is still rubbish. The majority may manifest the Will of the People, but what if the People are mad?
