Once there was the Trivium – the medieval standards of basic education.  They were designed to train a young person to become educated and wise.

To lift a definition of the Trivium from a website called Trivium Education – a site about which I know nothing, other than the definitions sound reasonable – the Trivium described the study of Three Ways (Tri-Vium) in which a person’s studies should be ordered.

“Discovering and ordering facts of reality comprises basic, systematic Knowledge– not only the rules developed and applied to the ordering of word/concepts for verbal expression and communication, but our first contact with conscious order as such. This is the initial, self-conscious technique used in properly (discursively or sequentially) organizing a body of knowledge from raw, factual data for the purpose of gaining understanding (through logic) and; thus, also organizing the individual human mind. It is the foundation upon which all other “methods of organization and order” are built.

Special grammar properly relates words to other words within a specified language like English, Russian, or Latin.

General grammar relates words to objective reality in any language and applies to all subjects as the first set of building blocks to integrated or fully mindful, objective knowledge. A body of knowledge which has been gathered and arranged under the rules of general grammar can now be subjected to logic for full understanding, which, emphatically, is a separate intellectual procedure.”

The principle of classical grammar may be a bit broader than modern grammar, which encompasses the rules of language construction, in specific and in general.  The concept is based, naturally, upon the Universal Language of the West – Latin.  Together with Ancient Greek – a more complicated and expressive language – there were many rules that allowed for the expression of subtle nuances of meaning, in a way that English is rather clumsy for expressing.

More concisely, it is the art of non-contradictory identification. The work of logic is proof. Proof consists of establishing the truth and validity of a concept or proposition in correspondence with objective, factual reality by following a self-consistent chain of higher-level thought back down to foundational, primary concepts or axioms (i.e., Existence, Consciousness, and Causality). It is a means of keeping us in touch and grounded to objective reality in our search for valid knowledge and understanding. Logic brings the rhythm of the subjective thoughts of the mind, and the subsequent actions of the body, into harmony with the rhythm of the objective universe. The intention is to amicably synchronize individual mental processes, and their attendant actions, with the processes of our surrounding natural, factual existence over the period of a lifetime.”

Logic allows for the rational extension of thought into areas not previously considered, and is a mechanism for affirming conclusions about those propositions.  The principle would embrace logic and analysis in the mathematical language, as well as the particular natural languages.

“Applying knowledge and understanding expressively comprises Wisdom or, in other words, it is systematically usable knowledge and understanding– to explore and find the proper choice of methods for cogently expressing the conclusions of grammar and logic on a subject in writing and/or oral argumentation (oratory). The annunciation of those conclusions is called a statement of rationale, the set of instructions deduced from the rationale for the purpose of application (of those conclusions) in the real world is called a statement of protocols.”

To organize and propound conclusions is a process beyond the simple realization of their truths.  One must be able to offer them as demonstrations, if they have enough logical proof to show them as theories, and to propound and justify them, if they are hypotheses.

1) Messaging.

Just as grammar denotes the laws organizing the construction of language, so are there rules for packaging messages in modern times.  These laws embrace not only traditions of word and sentence construction, but the media in which the message comes forth, as McLuhan rode to his fame on.

Grammar is a mental process engaged in by people.  Messaging is a synthetic process usually undertaken by a group, for a specific purpose.  If a message is poorly constructed, it is considered untrustworthy.  If it is orthodox, it is considered solid.

Grammar involves simply the rules of construction.  The higher forms of the Modern Trivium address content.

2)Meme Assembly.

In order to avoid the danger of independent thought, some self-assembly is still required, but the kits have specialized characteristics so that the toys will all be uniform.  I think of American political memes as soft Velcro-covered balls, that will easily stick together when jostled nearby each other.

My long-standing counterargument against American Political Thought is the matter of School Vouchers.

If one wishes to set about eliminating public school independence, it is quite easy.  Underwrite their costs with Federal money, but subject to their performing in a certain way.  When it comes to people, governmental reward/punishment for just behavior is nearly the perfect definition of Socialism.

Conservative/Republicans advocate the underwriting costs for public schools with Federal money, called “vouchers.”  They claim that they are interested in giving the poor but bright students a hand up, some help.  It’s not the case of the University – lord knows that the Money Carousel has already wrecked the University.  But at least the University preserves the fig leaf that the Federal money comes from the Student.

Liberal/Democrats abhor the voucher system.  It is not quite clear to me why.

In order to retain ideological purity, one cannot progress towards the risky matter of independent reason in this topic.  Otherwise, one will embrace forbidden thought.  The risk of shattering one’s ideological balance is terrifying to most people.  They assemble their pre-chewed Velcro thoughts into an internally inconsistent wad, identical to that of all others like them.  They ridicule the Others for being Opposite.

3) Advertising.

Advertising has replaced rhetoric, and shares elements with messaging, as described in the first category.  However, messaging itself speaks of the correct characteristics of “communication;” advertising looks at its ability to compel.

Communication is no longer a discussion between two people.  It is rather a discussion between the speaker, and the mute listener.  In the same way, communication is not spontaneously constructed by the parts of the mind, but can be constructed synthetically in groups or clusters of individuals.

Broadly speaking, all entities which have a favored way of looking at the world.
