One ground-rule of societies that worship Amtssprache are those that seek like a magnet the clustering together under an umbrella of intellectual conformity. Selbstgleichhaltung is the German portmanteau word that comes to mind, from Klemperer. It is a moral failing – the inability of tolerating the anxiety that comes from independent thought, especially thought that might be criticized. Coming into conformity – falling in line – is a reassuring thing for many people. As much as the Third Reich praised the wolf, they acted like sheep.
